The Hagg - 2017 report out now

  • Posted On: 10 May 2018

Swaledale and Arkengarthdale Archaeology Group have published the report on their excavation last year at The Hagg, Fremington Edge in Swaledale.

The group has been surveying ancient walls, trackways and houses in Swaledale for some years and last year they were able to excavate a likely site.  The excavations support the picture of a small successful farmstead, active between the 2nd and the 4th centuries AD. Evidence of two roundhouses has been recorded, with the LIDAR evidence suggesting at least the possibility of two further structures. The farmstead produced flour, worked on cultivated crops and likely also mined for surface lead, suggesting a busy prosperous settlement.
