Sad news: Brian S Donaghey

Members will be very sorry to learn the news from Helen McIlroy of the death of her husband Brian on 28 August. Brian, who until his retirement worked in the School of English, University of Sheffield, was an active member of the Society for a great many years. He was one of our Historic Buildings officers, monitoring planning applications, and also joined David Michelmore and myself in running the popular Palaeography weekends in the 1970s and 1980s. Brian played a particularly important role in the Medieval Section, where he edited 'Medieval Yorkshire'.

We send our sincere condolences to Helen, and will let you know more when we have further information.

With apologies for the short notice, Brian's funeral will be at Hope Cemetery, Derbyshire tomorrow (11th) at 2.30 in the afternoon, and afterwards at the Anglers' Rest in Bamford.  It will be quite informal, and anyone who wishes to say anything is welcome to do so, if they let Helen know in advance.  I will send on Helen's telephone numbers to Claremont, in case anyone wants to contact her.  The cemetery is on the edge of Hope village, in the direction of Castleton, half a mile or less on the right, off the road to Edale.
