New president for the society

Dr Gill Cookson

The society's newly elected president is Dr Gillian Cookson, an historian specialising in the industrial and landscape history of northern England.

Sylvia Thomas stood down as president after five years. Sylvia has led the society through a time of great transition, including negotiating the transfer of YAS library and archives collections into the care of the Brotherton Library. She was thanked at the AGM by members and by the new president for her tremendous commitment and good sense during some difficult times.

Gill, originally from the Spen Valley and now living in the North York Moors, has been history editor of the YAJ since 2011. She is a Leeds history graduate with a DPhil in economic history from the University of York, and a research fellow at Leeds. Working for the Victoria County History, Gill produced major new histories of Darlington and Sunderland. She is currently completing a book about textile machine-making in the north of England during the industrial revolution.
