Cambridge Library Collection and the YAHS Record Series - A new venture for our anniversary year

As part of the celebrations for its 150th anniversary year, the YAHS has been collaborating with the Cambridge Library Collection, a division of Cambridge University Press. The aim is to make available again more than fifty of the titles which first appeared in the YAHS Record Series from the 1880s to the 1990s. Last year, CUP received a suggestion from an Oxford historian that it should investigate the possibility of reissuing the series of volumes of Early Yorkshire Charters. This celebrated series of volumes, edited by Sir Charles Clay over a period of thirty years from 1935 to 1965, and published as an Extra Series to the Record Series, has long been out of print.

When CUP approached the society to suggest a reprint of Early Yorkshire Charters, it discovered that the society had a long and important record of publishing Yorkshire historical sources. It immediately became keen to republish a selection of volumes from the Record Series through its new print-on-demand programme. This has now been accomplished and each volume has been provided with a brief introduction by a member of the Record Series Committee, which informs readers of the societyís achievements in the study of the history and archaeology of Englandís largest historic county and provides a brief note about each work. This ensures that readers recognise that, despite its venerable age, the society is still very much in being and that they can become members to support and participate in its continuing work. Volume One Early Yorkshire Charters also contains a preface on the history of how the Society took over and continued for two decades the work which William Farrer, the Lancashire historian, had begun but abandoned.

Amongst the other reprints are the five volumes which contain the editions of the earliest of the Wakefield manorial court rolls. These were published in the Record Series between 1901 and 1944, thirty years before the society established a publishing section whose purpose was to produced editions of the court rolls. The result of this persistent work, begun more than a century ago is that the Wakefield court rolls series is now acknowledged as the most important project of court roll publication currently in being.

You can order books from this list of these newly-available volumes from CUP through your local bookseller or directly from CUP through its website. Volumes can be located on the CUP website by typing the title or author into the search box on the top right of the page.
