Life and Tradition in the Yorkshire Dales

A special anniversary edition

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Life and Tradition in the Yorkshire Dales by Marie Hartley and Joan Ingilby, the Yorkshire Archaeological & Historical Society has published a special new edition of this groundbreaking book.

The book was a great success, Hartley and Ingilby's masterpiece, their best-known and best-loved work, written in an accessible style which connected directly with their readers. ‘I am not very old’, wrote one, ‘but how strange it is to find that things, & the names for them, that were in daily use when I was a child are not now used, & many though not antiques are collector’s pieces.’

Arthur Raistrick, eminent Yorkshire geologist, industrial archaeologist and writer, told the authors 'you have preserved something of untold value.' It is this quality, Hartley and Ingilby’s pioneering approach to local history, and the significance of what they captured, which have prompted the re-publication of Life and Tradition fifty years on, after being out of print for many years.
