The Yorkshire Archaeological & Historical Society

Since 1863

For everyone interested in Yorkshire's past

About Us

Our aims and activities

Established in 1936, the Prehistory Research Section aims to promote the study of Yorkshire’s prehistoric past by:

  • Bringing together people interested in the prehistoric archaeology of Yorkshire
  • Holding free lectures in Leeds, addressed by some of the leading archaeologists and prehistorians in the county
  • Organising periodic one-day conferences on a wide range of topics
  • Arranging visits to sites of interest
  • Publishing an annual journal ‘Prehistoric Yorkshire’ containing news, information on sites and finds, local research, excavation summaries and book/article reviews
  • Supporting research and publication through grants (see below) Grants

For further information about the Prehistory Research Section, please contact the Section Secretary

The Section also supports research by providing small grants to assist with research costs - e.g. radiocarbon dating, isotope analysis, publication, or travel costs, etc. Details of conditions and how to apply can be obtained from the Section Secretary

Membership

There are two categories of membership:

  1. Member of our parent body, the Yorkshire Archaeological & Historical Society, who can join the Section at a special rate
  2. Member of the Prehistory Research Section only

Subscriptions are due on the 1st January each year.

As a registered charity, the Yorkshire Archaeological & Historical Society is eligible for the Gift Aid scheme. If you are a UK taxpayer you can at no extra cost to yourself make every pound you subscribe worth an extra 25 pence!

Details of subscription rates and Gift Aid can be found on the Membership page. You can pay online, or print out a membership form and pay by cheque. Use your browsers return button to come back to this page.
